Reno Professional Fire Fighters Give Back to Local Families and Children in Need Over the Holiday Season
Providing Families with Food Baskets and Homeless Children with Gifts and a Christmas Party
(RENO, NV) – In December 2013, the Reno Professional Fire Fighters (RPFF) held their 80th annual food basket program for families in need, in addition to a Christmas party for children experiencing homelessness in their community.
Through the Sam Saibini Christmas Food Basket Program, the RPFF continued their 80 year tradition of assembling and delivering food baskets to families in need over the holidays, all selected for the program through referrals from a number of community-based organizations and agencies. This year, 150 baskets were distributed by off-duty and retired firefighters.
The program has grown over the years with primary funding provided by RPFF members, and the donation of support and services from local businesses and individuals that have learned about the program. The program originated with Sam Saibini who retired in 1968 as a battalion chief, and started it by asking for personal donations from firefighters to purchase Christmas meals for families. The RPFF is proud that this longstanding charitable deed is still growing each year, with the increasing support of the community.
For the Christmas party, the RPFF transformed the Silver Legacy Resort & Casino Reno Ballroom into a center of creative Christmas activities, including craft stations, games, and face painting. The children ages 6 to 14, primarily from Reno’s downtown core area, were pre-selected by the Washoe County School District, the Big Brothers and Big Sisters Program, Pathfinders Ministry, and the Family Shelter. They each also had the chance to visit Santa Claus and select a present from the “Toy Room.”
The Silver Legacy Resort & Casino catered lunch and the other activities were funded and supported by the RPFF and their families, police officers, local businesses, artists, and various volunteers.
